how to make seach box visible in link page

I have a list view for a MetaAssociationEnd. The MetaAssociationEnd is using a UIManager to override/implement the DoLink method. Is it possible to add a seach box on the page? If so, how can I make it appear? Attached is an image for reference.

I have also tried not using a UIManager and connected the query as a Candidate instead.

Is it an expected behavior, that if the values of the selection come from a query, the search box is disabled?
