Replacing a variant does not cause a change on consolidation

I have been testing using variants.  One of my tests was to select to replace a task with another task within a variant and then consolidate the variant with the expectation that the task that was flagged as the substitute would replace the original element on the diagram.  However, post consolidation the relacement had not taken place though when checking through Explore the subsitution was still flagged.  Has anyone else tried to do this and managed to get the result of the original element being replaced with the substitute.

We tried the same in the past and we came at the same conclusion.

If I recall, it was said that that behaviour was set up by design....
